- The
Norfolk Cosmopolitan Club was chartered February 27, 1924 and is a
501(c)(3) philanthropic organization.
- The
club is affiliated with Cosmopolitan International, which operates through
a network of local Clubs in the United States,
Canada and Mexico.
- International
is subdivided into Federations and the Norfolk Club is a part of the
Capital Federation, comprised of 14 clubs
in the States of Pennsylvania,
Maryland, New Jersey, District of Columbia, Virginia and North Carolina
- The
entire International membership consists of approximately 2,500 members,
representing about 100 clubs.
- An
outstanding project of the Norfolk Club is the annual awarding of the
Cosmopolitan Distinguished Service Award medal
to Norfolk’s First Citizen,
selected each year by a non-Cosmopolitan group of Norfolk citizens from
nominations submitted by the general public. This has been a continuous
event since its inception in 1928 and the Annual distinguished Service
Award Banquet is a social highlight on the Norfolk scene.
- In
1984, the Norfolk Club spearheaded a Million Dollar Campaign to establish
what is now the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center at the
Eastern Virginia
Medical School here in Norfolk.
- The EVMS
Strelitz Diabetes Center includes an internationally acclaimed,
multi-million dollar endowed Research Center, a Diabetes
In-and-Out
Patient Facility, and numerous entities providing patient health and
dietary care and diabetic treatment training and instruction for health
care professionals.
- The
Norfolk Cosmopolitan Club also has a Foundation that has provided funds
for a number of charitable organizations including
Crime Line, Tidewater
Pastoral Service, Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team, Salvation Army, Joy
Fund, Norfolk Botanical Children’s Garden, EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center and
Cosmopolitan Diabetes Foundation.
- Golf
outings, cookouts, family picnics, fishing trips and seafood feasts are
just a few of the activities our members enjoy.
